When I was in college, our dining hall would bring in brownies every Friday night. These were no ordinary brownies. They were covered in a layer of ultra thick, fudgy frosting. The brownies themselves were nothing special, but man, that frosting? Worth every bite.

I love the idea of a cookie jar. Growing up, that wasn’t something we had in our house. We had plenty of dessert options, mind you. Just not an actual jar with cookies inside. As a result, it’s always been sort of a dream for me to have a cookie jar.

Yep, my caramel apples, so lovingly planned to go up today for the first day at school, tanked. See, I had this massive migraine yesterday and I tried (smarty that I am) to make caramel apples while lights were flashing in my field of vision and my head was pounding.

My birthday cake is kind of a problem every year. You see, I am the family cake baker. So when it comes time for someone to provide a cake for me, there’s usually a debacle of some kind.

Why are Sundays so exhausting? Seriously. I’ve never liked Sunday. At best, it feels like a last gasp of freedom all day, and it’s also consumed by errands or playdates or birthday parties or other activities that make my feet hurt.

If Friday is the best day (which I believe it is, since anticipation is the key to all pleasure), Sunday is the worst for the same reason. So I try to have a nice Sunday treat to look forward to, or even a few. My husband and I do date night on Sundays because even though we’re too tired to go out, we get a second wind (or a fifteenth?), and I love that. And it’s always great to have a food treat around, too!

They say the darkest hour is just before dawn.

With all due respect, that’s a pile of $#!*. Just not true at all, I’m afraid. The darkest hour is 9:30 PM when your kids have gone to bed and you wanted to watch episodes of Cake Boss but you can’t because you’re in piping hell. The cake isn’t looking right, melted frosting is leaking out of the wrong side of the piping bag into your hair, and you feel nothing but deep despair.
