Fluffernutter Blondies
I read this really fascinating article the other day about why time seems to speed up as we get older. It’s actually a wonderfully simple explanation of this common phenomenon, and it turns out that we’re not all going crazy.
Time does speed up as we age. See, when we’re little, a month seems like forever because our lives have been pretty short. A six year-old will spend what seems like decades waiting for her birthday because, relatively speaking, a year is a huge percentage of her life. That’s not at all true for a thirty-six year old, for whom a year is a much smaller percentage of life. And by the time anyone reaches much older age, time whizzes by because the majority of years spent alive vs. any time increment is much larger.
Do I sound like a total nerd here? You caught me. I am a nerd about a lot of things, like Shakespeare, Star Trek, and getting older. Getting older scares me, and the faster time goes, the more my existential dread rears its ugly head. But since I’m also a baking nerd, I can use my prowess in the kitchen to provide some much-needed distraction from time’s unyielding march onward.
These bars look awesome! I love crumb bars, and raspberries are so delicious right now.
Thank you! I love the fruit desserts right now!
I always love fruit desserts and raspberries are totally in with me now since I have a big patch of my own and the raspberries are quite busy producing and I do make my own jam and I do miss Mad Men to do it and have no problem with that. It’s great we can all choose our priorities and have these bars no matter if we make our own or buy it at the store. The bars look amazing and I will have to make them NOW while the local berries and jam are so amazing. Thanks for the work you did to get this recipe as crummy as possible to make it as perfect as possible. Enjoy Mad Men for me!!
Wow, you have your own raspberries? I’m so jealous! I think I’d make fresh jam in that case!
Thanks for the kind words. And yes, I will definitely enjoy Mad Men! 🙂
I added some frozen raspberries I had on hand in with the jam. Just added goodness!! A delicious recipe! (If you use glass bakeware, 35 min. is the perfect bake time!)
Ooh, thanks for the tip, Jody! I used a metal pan. Love the idea to add frozen raspberries!
Hope your summer is super relaxing so far!
AND, next time I make these, I’m going to use blackberry jam that my mom made for me. I totally forgot about it – then remembered after my first bite of the raspberry treat (which was awesome!!) – and realized that the possibilities are MANY. Always good to have delicious options!
Your mom makes jam? That is awesome! And you could put chocolate chips in here, too!
These sound fabulous!! I love lots and lots of crumb in my crumb bars, and these totally look like they meet that standard! 😉

Thanks! That’s my standard, too. When are they going to invent a crumbs-only dessert?!
I just tried the blackberry version – layer of blackberry jam (mine was homemade by my mom) and then a few fresh blackberries on top before pouring over the crumble. Consider it a tie for first! (and I LOVE raspberries, so a tie is a big deal!) Again, baked up on my glass 8×8 in exactly 35 minutes. Looks and tastes great!!
Thanks for letting me know, Jody! That sounds really good. Maybe I can try it with apple in the fall?
Enjoy your last week of freedom!
